We are currently accepting qualified applications for an Ophthalmology Health Technician to support one of our Government clients at Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft. Lewis, WA)
Summary:  The Ophthalmology Health Technician shall provide services in accordance with established standards, principals and ethics of the profession at Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft Lewis) providing health care services to a diverse population.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position):
  • Shall obtain and records patients ophthalmic complaints and symptoms on clinic record where it is readily available to the doctor.
  • Shall record visual acuity, current lens prescription, past medical history, past ophthalmic history, family medical history, allergy history, and additional medical information as appropriate.
  • Shall triage patient complaints, directing urgent or emergency cases to the physician's attention.
  • Shall perform non-contact and applanation tonometry as required.
  • Shall assist ophthalmologist during treatment of patients by performing such tasks as administering appropriate medication, changing dressings, and removing sutures.
  • Shall perform ultrasonography, sets up ophthalmic ultrasound equipment for diagnostic use by the physician and performs routine cleaning of the ultrasound probes.
  • Shall perform A-scan measurements and intraocular lens power calculations as directed by the surgeon.
  • Shall perform Fluorescein Angiography, positions and instructs the patient prior to the procedure.
  • Shall complete consent forms.
  • Shall prepare and administers IV medications under physician supervision.
  • Shall prepare camera with correct film, filters and exposure, completes ophthalmic photography independently; responsible for timely delivery for development.
  • Shall perform external and internal ophthalmic photography.
  • Shall instruct and positions patient.
  • Shall complete requested external and internal ophthalmic photography independently.
  • Shall deliver film for timely development.
  • Shall perform Goldmann and Humphrey visual fields independently.
  • Shall position and instruct patient regarding each type of visual field test.
  • Shall select the appropriate diagnostic fields target size and testing programs; fowards test results to requesting physician.
  • Shall perform Worth 4 dot test and the Lancaster Red-Green test. 
  • Shall perform stereo acuity testing, color vision testing, contrast sensitivity testing, and contrast sensitivity testing.
  • Shall provide instruction and technical guidance to ancillary heath care personnel such as reservists, technicians, and 91Y students.
  • Shall train them in the duties of the ophthalmic technician as outlined in this job description. Maintains medication and medical supplies in each clinic exam room.
  • Shall provide NCOIC with list of medication and medical supply shortages as they occur with a minimum weekly update.
  • Shall clean and organized exam room equipment, medications and medical supplies on a weekly basis; informs NCOIC of any noted equipment malfunction.
  • Shall assist with laser surgery and obtains consent form.
  • Shall administer pre-laser medications and ensures proper setup and operation of the laser equipment; maintains laser safety precautions.
  • Shall prepare patients and obtains consent form under physician supervision.
  • Shall perform setup of operating room lighting, equipment and instruments, window coverings and other preliminaries for surgery.
  • Shall ensure the sterility and appropriate function of all equipment and supplies before surgery.
  • Shall ensure setup of all solutions, medications and the local anesthesia mixtures requested by the operating room staff.
  • Shall serve as first surgical assistant and as scrub assistant to the surgeon in major and minor surgical procedures.
  • As scrub assistant, shall instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the operative procedure, performs retraction, holding and cutting sutures and keeping the cornea moist with sterile saline. Both intuitively by previous experience and by direction of the surgeon, places instruments and supplies in surgeon's hands in such a manner as to preclude necessity for his removal of attention from the operative field. Promptly and accurately executes the surgeon's direction. Stays alert for complications arising during the course of the operative procedure.
  • As first surgical assistant, shall actively engage in the manipulations of tissues with the proper instruments, both intuitively by previous experience and by direction of the surgeon, as to facilitate the successful completion of the given procedure.
  • During the operative procedure, shall be responsible for the setup of equipment used for all ophthalmic surgeries, retinal diathermy and cryopexy, tissue cautery and other intraoperative equipment setups. Disposes of contaminated supplies and instruments postoperatively.
  • Shall assist in the postoperative instruction of the patient.
Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)
  • Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHOP) certification required.
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Relevant previous work experience in an outpatient clinic setting preferred.
  • Shall have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).  Certification must be by American Heart Association specifically stating it is for healthcare providers and will be renewed every two years.
  • Shall maintain all license and certification requirements and meet all continuing education requirements of the U.S. jurisdiction in which they are licensed to practice. 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all parties and other health care providers.  In addition, if the position requires the use of computers, the contract HCPs shall be computer literate.
  • Shall have the required education, training, experience and documented current competence in the required specialty position description. 
  • Shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.
Work Environment:
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
  • During visits to areas of operations, may be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions.  Is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise.
