  • Provide direct patient care services in accordance with legal, ethical, agency and
institutional standards through the evaluation of patients and therapeutic treatment
as ordered by Health Services clinical staff
Performs a broad range of therapeutic measures such as care for patients with
varying health problems, i.e., chronic diseases, comorbidities, chronic pain, wound
management, patient education, end-of-life care, interventions for acute care
  • Implements established protocols and standing orders for handling inmate
complaints during sick call and initiates emergency care as needed according to
institution policy
  • Perform nursing duties within the scope of the current licensure;
  • Develops and performs a nursing assessment for each patient, to include planning,
implementing, and evaluating nursing care
  • May assess and identify high risk symptoms/behaviors in patients, to include suicidal risk, homicidal risk and risk for verbal, physical or sexual abuse
  • Interviews new inmate arrivals and completes medical intake screenings with health history and records/documents findings
  • Must complete written or electronic medical record documentation in an accurate,well-organized and timely manner
  • Ability to competently utilize specialized monitoring equipment including, but not limited to, EKG machines, blood pressure equipment, vital signs machines, cardiac monitors, glucometers, automatic external defibrillators, IV infusions pumps, laboratory equipment, traction/brace equipment, etc.
  • May have responsibility for reviewing laboratory data and facilitating review of the results with a physician or Advanced Practice Provider (APP), and notifies a physician or APP when panic laboratory values are received
  • Administer medications as prescribed i.e., by mouth, intra-dermally, subcutaneously, intravenously, or intramuscular
  • Assist with distribution of medications at pill line and/or insulin line
  • Monitor and evaluate the response to therap
  • Perform Tuberculin skin testing, and interpret and document results
  • Perform venipuncture for the purpose of obtaining laboratory specimen
  • Perform and record diagnostic testing, i.e., venipuncture for laboratory studies, visual acuity testing, EKGs (per orders from APPs or physicians)
  • Process lab work, to include filing on a daily basis
  • Ensure all sharps (needles, syringes, vacutainers, butterflies, suture needles) are secured, accounted for, stored and disposed of according to institutional and national policy;
  • Assist the APPs and physicians in the management and oversight of chronic care clinics
  • Possess knowledge of treatment of chronic health problems, i.e., hypertension,diabetes, and asthma
  • Initiate emergency care as needed according to established institutional protocols and community standards
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality Adhere to infection control policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of mental health disorders and must have the ability to screen for gross mood changes
  • Ability to provide basic first aid, prevention care, and guidance in treating a variety of common illnesses/injuries
  • Perform duties as required to be assigned, but accept only those nursing assignments which are commensurate with his/her educational preparation, training, experience, and nursing licensure laws.
Certification and Experience
  • Required to be Board Certified or have equivalent experience to be considered an expert in the field of medicine.
  • Must be fully licensed where required by law.
  • Must be qualified for, and granted clinical privileges by the Medical Staff at this facility. Clinical privileges are granted, within well-defined limits, based on individual's professional license and experience, competence, ability and judgement.
  • One year, or more, of experience in a correctional environment is preferred, but not required.
Monday – Friday. 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. 40 hours per week.
