We are currently accepting qualified applications for a MedSurg LPN to support one of our Government clients at Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft. Lewis, WA)
 
Summary:  The Licensed Practical Nurse shall provide services in accordance with established standards, principals and ethics of the profession at Madigan Army Medical Center (Ft Lewis) providing health care services to a diverse population.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position):
  • The LPN shall serve as a technical assistant during the full range of examinations, treatments and invasive procedures performed
  • Shall use patient assessment data to help identify patient and disease specific factors which influence decisions as to type of examination, appropriate selection from scopes available based on the patient history and diagnosis, requirements for different types of cautery devices, etc.
  • Shall assist with  procedures done in the MedSurg assigned clinic. 
  • Shall assists in the establishment of written procedures and operating instructions.
  • Shall prepare and administer prescribed medications by oral, topical, intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular routes;
  • Provides written and verbal reports regarding patients care for inclusion in the patients medical record; measures and records vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, etc.
  • Performs a variety of auxiliary duties connected with patient care such as checking operational status of emergency equipment, and ensuring sterile condition of surgical, examination and treatment instruments, tools and devices and maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly work environment by applying knowledge of infection control measures and aseptic techniques.
  • Maintains adequate supplies in patient care areas, completes laboratory requests, obtains patient records, retrieves x-ray and laboratory reports, monitors stock par levels and expiration dates of available medications/vaccines and replenishing, when required.
  • Shall provide emotional support to patients and concerned others

Minimum Qualifications: (To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.)
  • Graduate from an accredited community college, junior college, college, university or vocational nursing program approved by the appropriate State agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Current, full, active and unrestricted license as a practical or vocational nurse.
  • Wound care experience or training preferred but not required. Experience in a general surgery ambulatory clinic or on a hospital inpatient surgical unit preferred but not required
  • Shall have and maintain current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).  Certification must be by American Heart Association specifically stating it is for healthcare providers and will be renewed every two years.
  • Shall maintain all license and certification requirements and meet all continuing education requirements of the U.S. jurisdiction in which they are licensed to practice. 
 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Practical knowledge of the equipment and procedures performed in the general surgery surgical subspecialty involving a full range of specialized tests or non-routine intricate diagnostic examinations and treatments.
  • Knowledge and skill with the assembly, disassembly, operation, and cleaning of endoscopic equipment and therapeutic instruments used during endoscopic surgery/procedures. Skill to apply such knowledge to perform relatively new diagnostic or treatment procedures involving very fine distinctions or many definitive steps.
  • Practical knowledge of sterile minor procedures and equipment used for skin and breast procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of wound care.
  • Knowledge and skill in performance of upper and lower gastrointestinal physiologic testing, properly obtaining cultures and handling of pathology specimens.
  • Knowledge of the procedures for which it is used, be trained to maintain a sterile field.
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, as it relates to all General Surgery (to include GI) procedures, such as location, appearance and function of the various major systems including muscular, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, hepatobiliary, digestive, and urinary systems in order to interpret the examination request accurately and to recognize the need for additional tests or different positioning.
  • Knowledge of common diseases, and their effects on the organs, and methods of treatment.
  • Knowledge of pharmacology to understand drug reaction, patient responses, and common dosages.
  • Knowledge of the required steps and skill sufficient to prepare the patient and the procedure suite for a full range of diagnostic procedures (minor or complex).
  • Knowledge of procedures in order to assist the physician before, during, and following the procedure.
  • Knowledge of, and skill sufficient to prepare instruments, equipment, supplies and medications used in procedures in the General Surgery Clinic.
  • Ability to communicate technical information about procedures, within scope of practice, to LPN students, interns, residents, visiting staff, and Reservists.
  • Shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with all parties and other health care providers.  In addition, if the position requires the use of computers, the contract HCPs shall be computer literate.
  • Shall have the required education, training, experience and documented current competence in the required specialty position description.  
  • Shall possess sufficient initiative, interpersonal relationship skills and social sensitivity such that he/she can relate constructively to a variety of patients from diverse backgrounds.
